History and Legend

Bandhavgarh National Park was once a private game reserve of the Maharaja of Rewa. It was officially declared a national park in 1968. The park's name, Bandhavgarh, holds a fascinating story. It is derived from the prominent hillock that Lord Rama bestowed upon his brother Laxman. It was to keep a watchful eye on Lanka.  The history of this region can be traced back to the 1st Century. There are some 39 old caves within a radius of 5km of Bandhavgarh fort. Some of these caves are embossed with images of Tigers, elephants and horsemen. One of the most prominent caves also known as Badi Gufa has 9 small rooms and a broad entrance, dates back to the 10th Century.

The Bandhavgarh fort has been ruled by many dynasties the Mauryan, Vakataka, Sengar, Kalachuris and the Baghels. In 1617 the capital was moved to Reva by the then Ruling King.

Apart from the famous temple located inside the fort which is now off limits for people, the Shesh Saiyya or the statue of Sleeping Vishnu in the Tala zone of Bandhavgarh is also popular with tourists.

Biodiversity

Bandhavgarh National Park is a haven of floral diversity. The secret is that it has a unique combination of landforms, soil types, and the region's moist character. The park area contains various forest types. Prominent sections at the Bandhavgarh National Park are the Moist Peninsular Sal Forest, Southern Tropical Moist Mixed Deciduous Forest, and Southern Tropical Dry Mixed Deciduous Forest.
